Speech by SHA at Opening Ceremony of Asia and Pacific Jump Rope Championship 2017 (English only)
******************************************************************************************
Following is the speech by the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, at the Opening Ceremony of the Asia and Pacific Jump Rope Championship 2017 this morning (August 18):

Mr Chong (Shing-yum), Mr Li (Chi-keung), Mr Leung (kin-chung), Ms Boggs (Rochelle), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning.  It gives me great pleasure to join you all today at the Opening Ceremony of the Asia and Pacific Jump Rope Championship 2017.  On behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all players and officials from Hong Kong and overseas.

I must thank Hong Kong Rope Skipping Federation, China for promoting the sport.  Last month, the Federation has fielded a delegation to participate in the World Jump Rope Championship 2017 in USA and attained 31 gold, 21 silver and 19 bronze medals, the best ever results for Hong Kong team in the game.

I am delighted that the Asia and Pacific Jump Rope Championship is accredited as a celebration programme to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR.  A total of 14 teams from Asia and Pacific region will compete this year.  I am sure it will be one of the most anticipated events in Hong Kong.

Apart from Jump Rope Championship, we have just hosted Hong Kong Masters (Snooker), Premier League Asia Trophy and FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix-Hong Kong.  Hong Kong is an ideal hub for major international sports events.  In order to keep our competitive edge, the Government has committed a major investment in the Kai Tak Sports Park project.  Upon completion around 2022/23, it will provide a wide range of multi-purpose facilities that will cater for major large scale international sports events.

Lastly, I wish the Championship every success and all of you a pleasant stay in Hong Kong.  Thank you.
