CS visits Tuen Mun District (with photos)
*****************************************

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, visited Tuen Mun District this afternoon (August 1).  He toured Chu Hai College of Higher Education and a restaurant run by a social enterprise in the district, and also met with Tuen Mun District Council (TMDC) members to learn more about the latest development of the district.

Accompanied by the Acting District Officer (Tuen Mun), Mr Simpson Lo, Mr Cheung first visited the new campus of Chu Hai College at Castle Peak Road, Castle Peak Bay. He toured the various facilities of the campus and joined students of the College in a newscast simulation session, and engaged in a frank and cordial dialogue with them. He then chatted with alumni and students about their views on new resources for quality education. Mr Cheung was pleased to hear that some of the students present would benefit from the non-means-tested annual subsidy of $30,000 for pursuing full-time local self-financing undergraduate studies.  It would help alleviate their financial burden in taking such courses.

Mr Cheung then visited a social enterprise restaurant, the Fantastic Cafe, being operated by the Social Service Division of the Free Methodist Church of Hong Kong (FMC). He was briefed about its successful experience in brand building and cross-district expansion of the business. Mr Cheung also chatted with the restaurant staff to learn more about their work. Since 2007, the FMC has made use of seed grants provided by Home Affairs Department’s Enhancing Self-Reliance Through District Partnership Programme to establish social enterprise restaurants in various districts to create job opportunities for women with limited skills or education, or who became unemployed owing to economic changes. Mr Cheung was glad to note that the restaurant has been widely supported by customers and encouraged all to continue the good work to help promote the development of social enterprises.

Before concluding the visit, Mr Cheung had a meeting with members of the TMDC to listen to their views on various development issues and matters of concern to the community.
