LegCo Panel on Commerce and Industry begins duty visit in Israel (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The delegation of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Commerce and Industry began the duty visit to Israel to better understand the experience of Israel in the promotion of the development of the innovation and technology industry and re-industrialisation.
 
     The delegation visited the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) this morning (July 24, Israel time) and met with Senior Director, International Collaborations Division of IIA, Mr Avi Luvton. Delegation members were briefed by Mr Luvton on various incentive programmes offered by IIA aiming at promoting technological innovation in Israel.  IIA is an independent public entity established by the Israeli Government in early 2016 and is responsible for managing support programmes that are tailored to the business needs of specific target groups of entrepreneurs and companies.

     The delegation arrived at Jerusalem of Israel yesterday (July 23, Israel time) and was greeted by Head of Asia and Pacific Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Israeli Government, Mr Hagai Shagrir, at a welcoming lunch where Mr Shagrir shared with the delegation his views on how the history of Israel has prompted the country to achieve technological independence and supremacy.

     The delegation also visited the Jerusalem Venture Partners (JVP) and met with
Partner and Chief Operating Officer of JVP, Ms Fiona M.Darmon, to learn more about the work of JVP and the development of the venture capital industry in Israel, which played an important role in financing the booming high-technology sector.
 
     At the invitation of Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the delegation joined a tour of the Old City of Jerusalem to better understand the historical and cultural background of Israel.
 
     The delegation will visit the Sorek Desalination Plant this afternoon. Delegation members will also visit Knesset (Israeli Parliament) and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem tomorrow (July 25, Israel time).
 
     The delegation is led by the delegation leader Mr Wu Chi-wai, who is also the Chairman of the LegCo Panel on Commerce and Industry.  Other participating Members include Panel members Mr Paul Tse, Mr Ma Fung-kwok, Mr Charles Mok, Dr Lo Wai-kwok and Mr Chung Kwok-pan, as well as non-Panel Members Dr Helena Wong, Mr Alvin Yeung and Dr Junius Ho.
