Cluster of Influenza A cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following announcement today (July 21):
 
     Five patients (aged 49 to 83) and two staff members in a male medical ward have presented with fever and respiratory symptoms since July 14. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients and their test results confirmed positive for Influenza A. The patients are being treated in isolation. Two of the patients are respectively in critical and serious conditions due to underlying diseases. The other three patients are in a stable condition, one of whom has been transferred to the Kowloon Hospital for rehabilitation. One staff member is on sick leave while the other has recovered.
 
     A meeting was held by the Hospital Infection Control Team, the department concerned and experts of the Centre for Health Protection. Infection control measures on the ward concerned have already been stepped up according to prevailing guidelines. All other patients in the ward are under close medical surveillance.
 
     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
