Transcript of remarks by CS at media session (with video)
*********************************************************
Following is the transcript of remarks by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, at a media session after attending the opening ceremony of Conference 2017 - Evolution of Corrections this morning (July 19):

Reporter: Mr Cheung, how can the Government mend the relationship with the lawmakers when there are four more lawmakers being ousted from LegCo? Do you plan to do anything to mend the relationship?

Chief Secretary for Administration: Well, let me stress that the new-term Government, we are determined to build relationship, particularly to build rapport with the pan-democrats or non-establishment members of the Legislative Council. We are determined to really to rebuild, as it were, our relationship on an equal footing, and particularly adopt a business-like attitude, with the overall interests of Hong Kong community in mind and as a cardinal principle to deal with all sorts of LegCo business. That’s why I appeal - the Chief Executive yesterday appealed already - I repeat the appeal today to all pan-democrat LegCo members to deal with the eight items on the Finance Committee agenda today, next eight hours, rationally and in a sensible way, because they are all in public interest. All the eight items in fact are urgent, important to the community and also livelihood issues, so I would urge all members, in particular pan-democrats again, to rationally handle the eight items on the table.

Reporter: Can the Government promise that you will not disqualify any more pan-democratic lawmakers in this administration?

Chief Secretary for Administration: Well, the Chief Executive already made it clear yesterday that at the present stage we have no intention of bringing up new cases at this present stage, and that’s the point that the Chief Executive made clear yesterday in her stand-up with the media before the Executive Council meeting yesterday morning. So let me stress that we will adopt a sensible, rational, amicable approach, but within the framework of the rule of law. It’s very important. OK?
