Provision of "stop-and-go" e-payment facilities at Shing Mun Tunnels to begin next Sunday (with photo)
***************************************************************

The Transport Department (TD) today (July 14) said that the "stop-and-go" e-payment system will be first introduced at the manual toll booths of the Shing Mun Tunnels next Sunday (July 23) to provide motorists with an additional and convenient means of toll payment.

A spokesman for the TD said that the "stop-and-go" e-payment system offers four payment methods, namely Octopus, Visa payWave, Mastercard contactless and UnionPay QuickPass. By using the e-payment system to pay tunnel tolls, motorists can save time otherwise spent on cash counting and receiving change, providing greater convenience for them.

Two sets of smart card reader panels will be installed at each manual toll booth at the Shing Mun Tunnels to serve vehicles of different heights. Each smart card reader panel consists of two readers, with one reader supporting Octopus and the other supporting contactless credit cards (Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay) issued by local banks. There are labels on the respective card readers indicating the card types supported by each reader. Motorists can use their smart card to tap on the reader supporting their smart card for the toll payment.

The spokesman added that the introduction of the "stop-and-go" e-payment system will primarily give motorists one more choice of payment method. If they cannot pay the toll successfully by tapping their smart card, they can still pay the toll in cash at the manual toll booth.

The "stop-and-go" e-payment service will be introduced in phases at the other seven government tolled tunnels and roads, namely the Aberdeen Tunnel, the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel, the Lion Rock Tunnel, the Tsing Sha Highway, the Lantau Link and the Eastern Harbour Crossing. The tentative implementation schedule is set out in the Annex. The TD will make separate announcements before the implementation of the e-payment service at these seven government tolled tunnels and roads.

Motorists can browse the TD's website (www.td.gov.hk) or call 1823 for enquiries on the operation of the "stop-and-go" e-payment system.
