Over 600 people joined a Hong Kong 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner in London on July 9 (London time). The dinner, held at Allianz Park, was organised by the Organising Committee of the UK Chinese Gala Celebration for the 20th Anniversary of Hong Kong SAR. It formed part of the programme of events organised or supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, London (London ETO) to celebrate the anniversary.

Speaking to guests including leading figures in the UK Chinese community, members of Parliament and mayors from various London boroughs, the Director-General of the London ETO, Ms Priscilla To, highlighted the substantive achievements of Hong Kong in the past 20 years on various fronts. She said, "The event is not merely about celebrating Hong Kong's achievements in the past 20 years under 'one country two systems', but to unite Hong Kong people and friends to look for new opportunities in order to build an even better Hong Kong, whilst serving the development of our motherland."

The evening featured a flag salute ceremony and concluded with a spectacular fireworks display. The London ETO also mounted a special 20th anniversary exhibition on Hong Kong to highlight the city's achievements over the past two decades. Other guests of honour included the Minister and Deputy Head of Mission of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, Mr Zhu Qin; the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor Ian Adams; the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Chinese in Britain Group, Mr Barry Gardiner; and the Mayor of Barnet, Councillor Brian Salinger.
