Hong Kong Customs today (July 11) started a campaign to step up publicity at public housing estates all over Hong Kong to spread anti-illicit cigarette messages to members of the public. The campaign will last until July 18.

     Customs Head of Revenue and General Investigation Bureau, Mr Wong Jug-tung, said that the campaign is jointly organised with the Housing Department with an aim to remind people, especially youths, not to participate in illicit cigarette activities and to encourage people to report any suspected illicit cigarette activities to Customs.

     In addition to disseminating anti-illicit cigarette messages through poster displays and the Housing Channel of the Housing Department, Customs officers also distribute leaflets for better publicity effect.

     ​Mr Wong reminded members of the public that buying and selling illicit cigarettes are criminal offences and that conviction would lead to a criminal record.

     Under the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance, anyone involved in dealing with, possession of, selling or buying illicit cigarettes commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $1 million and imprisonment for two years.

     Members of the public may report any suspected illicit cigarette activities to the Customs 24-hour hotline 2545 6182.
