SED on new resources for quality education
******************************************

Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, at a media session after attending a radio programme today (July 6):

Reporter: Would you worry that these self-financing institutions would raise their fees (following the provision of a non-means-tested annual subsidy of $30,000 for eligible students pursuing full-time locally accredited local and non-local self-financing undergraduate programmes)?

Secretary for Education: In our agreement with these institutions, we have agreed that if their tuition fee increase is about the cost of living index, usually that would be OK. But if their proposed increase is above the cost of living index, they have to seek our approval. In doing so, they have to submit their supporting documents and also their arguments for that.

Reporter: Would you adjust the subsidy amount in the years later?

Secretary for Education: There will be a cost of living adjustment on the subsidy amount every year. So it will be increasing in line with the cost of living.
