"Inheritance: Ceramic Art of Chashan Kiln Exhibition" to showcase traditional ceramic artworks (with photos)

The "Inheritance: Ceramic Art of Chashan Kiln Exhibition" opens tomorrow (June 30) and will run until September 3 at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre. The exhibition will display more than 100 pieces of ceramic artwork made at Chashan Kiln, enabling visitors to appreciate the commitment and efforts of the master and his apprentices in preserving the traditional craft of ceramic making.

The art of making ceramics has a long history in China. Owing to the gradual decline of ceramic craftsmanship in contemporary society, Chi Lin Nunnery established Chashan Kiln, a ceramics workshop in Dongguan, Guangdong, to preserve this fine tradition and pass on the art and craft of ceramic making to the next generation by offering apprenticeships.

The exhibition will feature more than 100 ceramic artworks from Chashan Kiln which showcase traditional handicrafts as well as more innovative work, such as the skills of engraving and incision, the "skip-cut" technique, making leaf patterns and golden beads in the glaze, and more. Highlight exhibits include the temmoku glazed small cup with golden beads ("Come and Go"), ash glazed marbleware spherical jar ("Clouds after Rain"), a plum green glazed jar with lid ("Green Plum"), an ash-glazed plate with brushed lotus and skip-cut patterns ("Shower of Flowers") and a running marbleware plate with skip-cut pattern ("Interesting Clouds in the Sky").

Officiating at the opening ceremony today (June 29) were the Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Culture), Dr Louis Ng; the Chairman of the Art Sub-committee of the Museum Advisory Committee, Mr Vincent Lo; the Director of Chi Lin Nunnery, Mr Hui Kwok-leung; the Chairman of the Advisory Board of Nan Lian Garden, Professor Bernard Lim; ceramics master Gao Feng; and the Executive Secretary of the Antiquities and Monuments Office, Ms Susanna Siu.
