Excellent projects commended at Health Research Symposium 2017 (with photos)

     Eight excellent projects were commended today (June 16) at the Health Research Symposium 2017 organised by the Food and Health Bureau (FHB), in recognition of their outstanding contribution to health and medical research and health promotion.
      
    These projects, funded by the FHB's Health and Medical Research Fund (HMRF) and the Health Care and Promotion Scheme (HCPS, the former Health Care and Promotion Fund (HCPF)), have set a benchmark to foster evidence-based interventions to improve the health of the population.
      
     Officiating at the opening ceremony of the Symposium, the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, said, "The Government is committed to building a healthy society. Health and medical research has been playing a crucial role by informing our health policies with the latest knowledge and developments in the field, while health promotion projects help people adopt healthier lifestyles by enhancing awareness, changing adverse health behaviours or creating a conducive environment that supports good health practices."
      
      In order to achieve synergy of the HMRF and the former HCPF in their contribution to the improvement of health services and promotion of public health, Dr Ko said the Government further injected $1.5 billion to the HMRF last year and incorporated the HCPF into the HMRF. With these efforts, more funding opportunities are now provided to medical research and health promotion projects with an aim of generating new knowledge and fostering good health of the population.
      
     Today's Symposium, entitled "Creating Knowledge in Complex System for Sustainable Community Health", provides a sharing platform for about 700 medical and healthcare practitioners, academics, researchers and community and government representatives, and showcases the outcomes of the projects supported by the HMRF and the HCPS.
      
     At the Symposium, three renowned international experts, Professor Louisa Jorm from Australia, Dr Alain Labrique from the United States and Professor Sally Wyke from the United Kingdom, delivered keynote lectures on big data in health, mobile technology for community health and evaluation of complex interventions to improve health respectively.
      
     Sixteen leading local project teams from a variety of health-related disciplines also shared their experience and the outcomes of their projects on health and health services, infectious diseases, advanced medical research and health promotion.
