Hong Kong Customs yesterday (June 14) seized about 57.6 kilograms of suspected worked ivory with an estimated market value of about $1.15 million at Hong Kong International Airport.

     During Customs clearance at the airport yesterday afternoon, Customs officers found a total of about 57.6kg of suspected worked ivory concealed in three tailor-made vests placed inside three pieces of unclaimed baggage arriving from Zimbabwe.

     The cases were handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.

     Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting an endangered species without a licence is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and imprisonment for two years.
