EAC's response to reports on computer theft incident
****************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Electoral Affairs Commission:

The Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) has received reports on the Registration and Electoral Office's (REO) computer theft incident from the task force set up by the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau and from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD). The EAC thanked the task force and the PCPD for their hard work in conducting a comprehensive review of the incident and putting forward various improvement measures, covering aspects such as the REO's handling of voters' personal particulars, information technology security and security arrangements at election venues.

The EAC has urged the REO to thoroughly follow up on and promptly implement all the improvement measures contained in the reports to ensure that no similar incidents happen in future.

The EAC is undertaking a comprehensive review of the electoral arrangements for the 2017 Chief Executive Election as required by law and, having considered the findings of the reports of the task force and the PCPD, will submit a report to the Chief Executive within three months after the election.
