Annual Blood Donor Award 2017 cum World Blood Donor Day Celebration

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) held its Annual Donor Award Ceremony 2017 cum World Blood Donor Day Celebration today (June 11) to present awards to 1 270 blood donors who have achieved 50-times donations and above (multiple of 25) in 2016/2017. BTS organised another ceremony last Sunday (June 4) to present awards to 2 051 blood donors who have achieved 25-times donations. A total of 3 321 blood donors were awarded in the year.

     The officiating guests in the ceremony included the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man and Hospital Authority Chief Executive, Dr Leung Pak-yin. In addressing the ceremony, Dr Ko pointed out that there is no substitute for blood and it has shelf cycle. BTS needs to recruit 1 100 blood donors every day to ensure sufficient and stable blood supply to local hospitals for timely blood transfusion treatment.

     Mr Philip Tsai, the Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Red Cross, appreciated the awardees and thanked all blood donors for their unselfishness support to maintain the blood inventories at a satisfactory level.

     The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine cum Choh-Ming Li Professor of Medicine & Therapeutics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Francis Chan, and blood recipients Ms Wong Lai-sung and Ms Ng Wing-ying shared their experience in clinical treatment and transfusion at the ceremony.

     To celebrate the World Blood Donor Day (June 14), members of the public who donated blood successfully from today til June 18 will be presented with a souvenir of memo pad gift pack.
