Correctional officers stop person in custody committing self-harm
*****************************************************************
Correctional Services officers stopped a male person in custody committing self-harm at Stanley Prison yesterday (June 6).

At 9.21pm, the 29-year-old person in custody was found burning a bed sheet in a cell. An officer patrolling outside the cell immediately shouted to stop him and called for reinforcement and put out the fire.

The person in custody was conscious at the time. He received examination by the medical officer in the centre hospital and was found to have sustained head injuries. He was then transferred to a public hospital for further treatment. A clinical psychologist will follow up on the case. Moreover, the case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, "The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services."

The person in custody was convicted of burglary and theft.
