Hong Kong Customs today (May 31) seized about 47.4 kilograms (kg) of suspected worked ivory and 14.5 kg of suspected raw ivory with an estimated market value of about $1.1 million at Hong Kong International Airport.

     Customs officers intercepted a 27-year-old incoming male passenger at the airport this afternoon. During Customs clearance, Customs officers found four computer tower cases in his baggage.  About 47.4 kg of suspected worked ivory and 14.5 kg of suspected raw ivory were found concealed in the false compartment of the computer tower cases.    

     The case was handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.

     Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting an endangered species without a licence is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and imprisonment for two years.
