The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The 2017 internship programme organised by the Legislative Council Secretariat (the Secretariat) for local tertiary students commenced today (May 29), providing training opportunities for 17 undergraduate students and 10 sub-degree students, nominated by 17 tertiary institutions.

From today to July 7, the 27 students will be attached to various divisions of the Secretariat to acquire hands-on experience in its support services provided for the Legislative Council (LegCo). They will meet with the President and Members of LegCo, as well as observe meetings of LegCo and its committees so as to better understand the constitutional functions of LegCo. The students will also take part in an interactive role-play during which they will play the role of Members to experience the passage of a bill.

At the orientation session held this morning, the Acting Secretary General of the Secretariat, Miss Odelia Leung, met with the students and said, "The professionalism of the Secretariat is underpinned by the core values of political neutrality and impartiality, which every staff member upholds. To make the best of the learning opportunities provided by the internship programme, students are encouraged to be observant of the dynamics in the workplace, receptive to new knowledge and proactive in social networking."

During the orientation session, the students also visited the Chamber, toured the LegCo Library and Archives, the Public Complaints Office, as well as the education, visitor and press facilities in the Complex to gain an understanding of the various support services provided by the Secretariat for LegCo.

"In the upcoming six-week internship programme, I expect to learn more about the daily operation of the Secretariat. Meanwhile, I look forward to meeting with the LegCo President and Members to have in-depth discussions on the work of LegCo and various social issues. I believe this internship experience will broaden my knowledge and horizons, which will help my career planning," a student said during the orientation session.

The internship programme is an annual event held since 2013 during the summer vacation of students.
