6th Hong Kong Games concludes successfully (with photos)

     The 6th Hong Kong Games (HKG) concluded successfully today (May 28) at the Kowloon Park Sports Centre, after vigorous competitions in eight sport events by more than 3 200 athletes from the 18 districts during the Games.

     The HKG this year was not only a territory-wide major multi-sport event, but also one of the celebration events for the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The participating athletes competed in eight sports, namely athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

     Speaking at the HKG Closing cum Prize Presentation Ceremony this afternoon, the Acting Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, said that the Games is one of the Government's key events to promote sport for all in the community, giving the district athletes an opportunity to prove their ability while strengthening people's sense of belonging to the districts they live in as well as raising the public's interest and participation in sports activities.

     Other officiating guests attending the ceremony included the President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), Mr Timothy Fok; Legislative Council Member Mr Lau Kwok-fan; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li; the Commissioner for Sports, Mr Yeung Tak-keung; the Chairman of the Community Sports Committee, Mr David Yip; the Chairman of the 6th HKG Organising Committee, Mr William Tong; and the Organising Committee's Executive Adviser, Mr Chau How-chen.

     At the ceremony, the winning athletes and teams were awarded for their efforts. The 6th HKG overall championship went to Yuen Long District, which achieved the highest total score of the eight sports competitions. The overall first runner-up was Central and Western District while Eastern District was the overall second runner-up.

     The champions in the eight sports were Yuen Long District (athletics), Central and Western District (badminton and basketball), North District (futsal and volleyball), Kowloon City District (swimming), and Yau Tsim Mong District (table tennis and tennis).

     Prizes to encourage district participation were also presented to the winning districts today. For the Cheering Team Competition for the 18 Districts, Yuen Long District was the champion of the Best Performance Award, with Kwai Tsing District and Islands District as the first and second runners-up respectively. As for the Best Local Characteristics Award, Tuen Mun District won first place, while Yuen Long District was the first runner-up and Sha Tin District came third. Yuen Long District also won the Highest Popularity Award. Details of the prize-winning districts are listed in the attachment.

     In addition, a series of community involvement activities were organised. They included eight elite athlete demonstration and exchange activities, a sport seminar, the Vitality Run, the 18 Districts' Pledging cum Carnival, the Cheering Team Competition for the 18 Districts, the Opening Ceremony, a photo contest, and voting and guessing activities.

     Regarding the public voting for "My Favourite Sporty District", Wan Chai District was the winner online while Central and Western District won through paper votes. Another public participation game, guessing of the overall champion of the 6th HKG, also drew more than 200 000 participants. A lucky draw for winners for the above activities was held after the ceremony today. The winner list will be uploaded to the 6th HKG website (www.hongkonggames.hk) and published in Sing Tao Daily and the Standard on June 6.

     The Dynamic Moments Photo Contest is the other community involvement activity organised for the HKG. The submission deadline is June 6 and the results will be announced in mid-July.

     The 6th HKG, held from April 23 to May 28, was organised by the Sports Commission and co-ordinated by the Community Sports Committee, with the 18 District Councils, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the SF&OC and relevant National Sports Associations as co-organisers. The Hong Kong Jockey Club was the Principal Contributor.
