Dragon boat racing, concerts and more to be held amid 20th anniversary celebrations (with photo)

     Dragon boat races, a free jazz concert, a basketball competition and more are among the coming week's top events being held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

     Thundering drumbeats and rousing cheering will be heard at dragon boat races alongside the waterfront promenade of Tsing Yi Northeast Park on May 14 (Sunday) from 9am to 4pm.

     Thirty-seven teams will compete in the "Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of HKSAR in Kwai Tsing - Dragon Boat Invitation Race" organised by the Tsing Yi Rural Committee. On the sidelines will be an exhibition displaying photos of old scenes of Kwai Tsing District.

     Music lovers can enjoy afternoon jazz performances on May 13 (Saturday) at 4pm, 5pm and 6pm at the K11 Piazza in Tsim Sha Tsui. The programme, entitled "In the Mood for Jazz", is co-organised by Le French May and K11's musik11.
 
     A trio of world-renowned jazz musicians - French trumpeter Stéphane Belmondo and bassist Thomas Bramerie from France, and Dutch guitarist Jesse Van Ruller - will perform while digital animation by French artist Lilo will also be staged in the shows, set to delight in both sight and sound.

     The event "Life Story: Love, Sorry, Thanks, Farewell" will be staged on May 10 (Wednesday) at the Y Theatre and the Y Platform of Youth Square in Chai Wan.

     In addition to an exhibition, activities will include a music performance by a band, dance and theatre performances, and booth games. The project invites people across generations to promote a positive outlook on life to the public and foster a harmonious society.

     Twenty-four teams from local secondary schools will take part in the Panasonic School's Basketball Championships at Southorn Stadium in Wan Chai from May 11 to 14 (Thursday to Sunday).

     Organised by the Hong Kong Basketball Association (HKBA), the event will see four male teams and four female teams be awarded as champions, first runners-up and double second runners-up. Awards for Most Valuable Player, Shot Maker and Three-point Shooter will also be given.

     Among the top games will be a friendly match between representatives from the HKBA and the Hong Kong Police Force in the afternoon on May 13. The quarter-finals for female and male teams will be staged in the afternoon on May 13 and 14 respectively, and the finals are scheduled for the afternoon on May 14.      To share the joy of the 20th anniversary, the HKSAR Government is joining hands with different sectors to organise a wide variety of activities and events under the theme "Together·Progress·Opportunity".

     Altogether, more than 600 events and activities will be staged by the Government and different sectors until the end of 2017.
