The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) has made its debut in Australia with performances at the Arts Centre Melbourne yesterday (May 4, Melbourne time) and Sydney Opera House today (May 5, Sydney time).

Speaking at the pre-performance reception in Sydney, the Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Sydney (HKETO), Mr Arthur Au, said, "As Asia's leading orchestra, the HK Phil is going to perform some of the greatest music ever composed and will offer the audience an amazing artistic journey."

The Chairman of the Board of Governors of the HK Phil, Mr Y S Liu, said, "This is the first ever tour to Melbourne and Sydney by the HK Phil. We are all thrilled to have received such enthusiastic and overwhelming responses from the audience."

Mr Au said, "The HK Phil's performance marks the beginning of a series of events arranged by the HKETO in Australia to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. In the coming months, the HKETO will bring kids, youths and business people from Hong Kong to celebrate this important milestone with people in Australia under the theme 'Together·Progress·Opportunity'."

He added, "In the past two decades, Hong Kong has been progressing as a thriving arts hub with vibrancy and diversity. Every year, there are over 8 000 performances in Hong Kong, attracting an audience of more than 3 million."

"On the infrastructure side, the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong, one of the largest cultural projects in the world, is now spreading its wings."

The first permanent facility, the M+ Pavilion started operation last year, and the opening of a host of world-class facilities will follow in the coming years. These facilities will provide an excellent platform for both Hong Kong and international artists to showcase their talent and create more collaboration opportunities between Hong Kong and the rest of the world.
