Opening remarks by S for IT at award presentation ceremony of Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Scheme 2017 (English only) (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
Following are the opening remarks by the Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, at the award presentation ceremony of the Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Scheme 2017 today (April 25):

Bernard (Chairman of the Award Selection Committee of the Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Scheme, Mr Bernard Chan), Raymond (Group General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of HSBC Asia Pacific, Mr Raymond Cheng), Rosanna (Executive Director of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, Dr Rosanna Wong), distinguished guests, friends, ladies and gentlemen,

Good afternoon. I am truly delighted to join this most meaningful ceremony again this year, and share the joy of 25 outstanding undergraduates who will receive the Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award.

Since the inception of this Scholarship Award Scheme in 2011, a total of 150 undergraduates have been honoured. I am proud of their achievements, and I am glad to learn that the majority of past awardees are now pursuing a career in innovation and technology fields. We hope the success of our past awardees and their career choice will inspire more young people to join the exciting and rewarding field of innovation and technology.

First, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the supporting parties of this Scheme. My heartfelt gratitude goes to the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups for its excellent effort in implementing the Scheme, and to HSBC for its ongoing commitment as the Scheme sponsor.

I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to the Chairmen and members of the Award Selection Committee and the Award Scheme Administration Committee, as well as all the mentors who have invested valuable time on coaching and advising the awardees. Without your staunch support, this Scheme would not have been so well received by the students and the community at large for seven consecutive years.

The Innovation and Technology Bureau and the Scheme share the same mission - to nurture young talents and to pave a good career path for them.  The Government's objectives are to drive the transformation of Hong Kong's economy to a knowledge-based one, develop high value-added industries and create diversified employment opportunities, especially for our youths. Through the collaboration of the Government and stakeholders in the community, such as those who contributed to this Scheme, we hope to create a more vibrant innovation and technology ecosystem in Hong Kong. We also hope to cultivate a culture where our local talents with the passion and dedication to pursue their dreams in innovation and technology would be respected by their peers, family and the community.

Last but not least, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the awardees. In the months to come, you will be embarking on a fruitful learning experience through the associated programmes such as mentorship, internship and community services. Open your eyes and be inspired.

A career in innovation and technology does come with risks. However, let us not shy away from risks, but let us realise that risks mean opportunities, especially in a fast changing world driven by innovation and technology. I wish you all a challenging, exciting and fruitful journey ahead!

     Thank you very much.
