Chief Executive-elect donates surplus election campaign funds to charities
***************************************************************

     The Chief Executive-elect, Mrs Carrie Lam, said today (April 24) that she has donated the surplus of more than $6 million from her election campaign fund as well as some furniture and appliances to seven charitable organisations to help those in need.

     Mrs Lam said that her electioneering work received tremendous support from the community and she had raised about $18.7 million for her election campaign fund. After auditing, the total expenses of her election campaign amounted to about $12.6 million and the surplus was about $6.1 million.

     In order to make good use of the surplus funds for society, Mrs Lam donated $1 million to each of the following six small-scale non-governmental charitable organisations, which are exempt from tax under section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance:

1. Youth Outreach, which reaches out to youths at risk and helps them find themselves and rebuild their self-respect and self-confidence, creating platforms for them to grow and stand on their own feet;

2. Street Sleepers Action Committee Limited, which provides visits, meal deliveries and referral services to street sleepers;

3. Principal Chan Free Tutorial World Limited, which engages volunteer tutors to provide free one-to-one tutorial services for children from underprivileged families to ensure equal learning opportunities for them;

4. Precious Blood Children's Village, which provides care in a family setting for girls aged from 3 to 18 who are not adequately taken care of for family reasons;

5. Hans Anderson Club Limited, which serves children and youngsters by providing creative, professional and diversified storytelling services and organising innovative parent-child activities to help service recipients better connect with a knowledge-based society; and

6. Breakthrough (Juvenile Development) Limited, an organisation launched by police officers and through Operation Breakthrough providing sports and related services for youths at risk to help them live a positive life, so as to fight crime and prevent juvenile delinquency.

     Mrs Lam also donated $130,000 of the surplus funds, as well as some furniture and electrical appliances from her election campaign office, to the Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command so as to put the supplies to good use and conserve the environment.

     "These charitable organisations and their volunteers have been providing support and services to disadvantaged groups and the youth over the years. They are highly respectable and I fully support their work. I hope my donations can help to further enhance their services so that people in need can be better cared for," she said.

     Mrs Lam submitted to the Registration and Electoral Office today the duly completed Return and Declaration of Election Expenses and Election Donations in accordance with section 37 of the Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance (Cap 554).
