2017 World Book Day Fest to foster wide reading
***********************************************
The 2017 World Book Day Fest (the Fest), jointly organised by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) and the Education Bureau (EDB), will be held at SKH St Mary's Church Mok Hing Yiu College on April 22 (Saturday). School heads, teachers and school librarians of secondary and primary schools and kindergartens, as well as students and their parents are invited to participate in the event.

Building on the strengths of the promotion of reading across the curriculum, the Fest's theme is "Towards a Reading City", with an aim to foster a habit among students of reading widely to enrich their lives by tapping into the synergy of schools, parents and community partners in utilising a wide range of media resources across the city.

The signature programme of the Fest is a forum entitled "Read Widely, Live Splendidly". The Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong, Dr Cheri Chan; the General Secretary of the Family Development Foundation, Ms Shirley Loo; and the Principal of King Ling College, who is also an expert at promoting reading in schools, Dr Anson Yang, will join Professor Cecilia Chun, the Director of the Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, who is also the facilitator of the forum, in an inspiring and interactive discussion on how reading widely enriches their lives.

The Fest will feature a number of parallel sessions in which schools and parents as well as members of government and non-governmental organisations will share their experience of how to promote reading and writing across the city. Young children of kindergartens, primary and secondary students and their parents are welcome to participate in various reading-related activities, such as "Reading Marathon - Read Widely and Think Wisely" and "Reading with Your Kids: Reading with Fun and Joy", as well as Putonghua drama performances and others. Game booths will be set up to provide fun and creative Chinese and English language activities for the students, and a book exhibition will also be set up to display interesting multimedia resources for promoting reading across the curriculum.

School heads, teachers and school librarians are invited to enrol through the EDB's Training Calendar System (website: tcs.edb.gov.hk; Course ID CGCDI020170900) on or before April 18 (Tuesday). Places are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Details of the Fest have been uploaded onto the website of SCOLAR (www.language-education.com).
