Cluster of Influenza A cases in Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following announcement today (March 9):

     Four female patients (aged 51 to 86) in a medical ward of QEH had presented with upper respiratory tract infection symptoms since March 2. Clinical tests were arranged and Influenza A infection was confirmed for the patients. Two of the patients have been discharged, while the remaining two are being treated under isolation with one in stable condition and the other in serious condition due to her own illness.

     Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
