The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Berlin (HKETO Berlin) hosted a booth at the Austrian education fair BeSt in Vienna to inform around 78 000 visitors from Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Slovak Republic about the exciting study opportunities that Hong Kong has to offer. The fair, jointly organised by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy, and the Austrian Public Employment Service, was held from March 2 to 5. The Director of HKETO Berlin, Ms Betty Ho, gave a presentation on March 4 (Vienna time) about the unique advantages of studying in Hong Kong and the valuable experience guaranteed in the Working Holiday Scheme.

"Located on China's southern coast, Hong Kong is a unique place where East meets West and old meets new. As a former British colony and now a Special Administrative Region of China, Hong Kong is home to an exceptionally diverse culture and international study programmes," Ms Ho said when presenting Hong Kong's advantages. "Hong Kong is a multifaceted city where the English and Chinese languages, towering skyscrapers and historical sites exist side by side," she added.

Hong Kong's post-secondary education institutions offer a variety of high-quality programmes ranging from bachelor degrees to doctorates, which are internationally recognised. Hong Kong's programmes are taught in English, and the universities adopt international standards in curriculum design as well as quality assurance. Hong Kong universities also offer some of the world's best business administration and executive business management programmes. Of the 20 local degree-awarding institutions in Hong Kong, four are ranked in the world's top 60 and Asia's top 20 by the Quacquarelli Symonds University Rankings 2016-17.

To experience Hong Kong first-hand, young people from Austria can also make use of the Working Holiday Scheme. Under the Scheme, young people from Austria between the ages of 18 and 30 can stay up to six months in Hong Kong and are allowed to take up short-term employment as well as enrol in study or training courses as an incidental part of their stay so as to acquire a better understanding of the cultural, economic and social developments.

In her presentation, Ms Ho also introduced the various scholarship schemes that students can apply for. To attract outstanding non-local students to study in Hong Kong, the Government offers several scholarship opportunities. Among them, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Scholarship Fund offers HK$80,000 per year for each scholarship awardee, and the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$ 10,000 per year to each awardee for a period of up to three years.

HKETO Berlin will also participate in the international education fair Study World 2017, to be held on May 12 and 13 in Berlin. For details about studying in Hong Kong, please visit studyinhongkong.edu.hk.
