Suspect in connection with a throwing corrosive fluid case returned to Hong Kong

     Hong Kong Police received a 41-year-old suspect in connection with a conspiracy to throw corrosive fluid with intent to do grievous bodily harm case from the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department at the Lok Ma Chau Boundary Control Point today (February 6).

     The 41-year-old local male was in suspected connection with a conspiracy to throw corrosive fluid with intent to do grievous bodily harm case happened outside the District Court in Wan Chai in 2009, in which a foreign prosecutor sustained injury to his left eye after two men threw corrosive fluid onto him. Nine men were prosecuted by Police later. They were convicted by the High Court and sentenced to imprisonment of nine to 15 years. The 41-year-old man absconded to the Mainland after the case.

     With the information of the suspect, Police sought the assistance of the Ministry of Public Security and Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department. The suspect was subsequently arrested in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

     The Acting Chief Superintendent of Police of the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau, Mr Man Tat-shing spoke at the surrender ceremony held at Huanggang, Shenzhen that Hong Kong Police were grateful for the invaluable assistance rendered by the Ministry of Public Security, Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department, Shenzhen Public Security Bureau and the Public Security Department of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which resulted in the arrest of the suspect who absconded to the Mainland for over seven years. He said the suspect was trying to diminish and challenge the rule of law by throwing corrosive fluid onto the prosecutor. The arrest of the suspect in the Mainland strengthened the determination of the Police in Hong Kong and the Mainland to fight crime and to uphold the rule of law.

     Active investigation by Police Organized Crime and Triad Bureau is underway.
