*************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Special Needs Groups Task Force of the Commission on Poverty:

The Special Needs Groups Task Force of the Commission on Poverty (CoP) and the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) jointly launched a website today (January 13) to provide an information portal for parents of children with special educational needs (SEN children). The website, "Raising Special Kids, Braving Obstacle Race", will furnish parents with information about raising SEN children.

Participants at the launch ceremony included parents of SEN children and representatives of related organisations.

The ceremony was officiated by the Secretary of the CoP, Ms Doris Ho, and the Chairperson of the CoP's Special Needs Groups Task Force and Chief Executive of the HKCSS, Mr Chua Hoi-wai. Delivering the officiating speech, Ms Ho said, "As compared with other SEN websites, this website is tailor-made to meet the needs of parents. Through dissemination of information and experience sharing, the website aims to provide emotional support to parents as well as practical views and assistance on taking care of SEN children."

Mr Chua appealed to parents to share their experiences in taking care of SEN children through the website. Apart from presenting real-life cases, the website also provides information on services and contacts of relevant government departments and non-government organisations. The website's information will be updated regularly to cater for the needs of different types of SEN children and their families.

Others participating in today's ceremony included artiste Sunny Chan and another parent, Ms Fa Heung. They talked to the participants about their experiences in taking care of SEN children.

Associate Professor of the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the University of Hong Kong Dr Sandra Tsang also spoke to participants on factors affecting the development of SEN children and the importance of family support.

The ceremony closed after an exchange session attended by participating parents.

Members of the public may visit the website "Raising Special Kids, Braving Obstacle Race" at www.sen.org.hk.
