Cluster of Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae cases in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) made the following announcement today (December 30):
 
     Four male patients (aged 75 to 94) in a Medical Ward have been confirmed as having Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae since December 17. Among the four patients, three of them are still hospitalised under isolation in PYNEH and Tung Wah Eastern Hospital in stable condition. The other patient had passed away due to his underlying disease.

     The Hospital Infection Control Team, the departments concerned and experts of the Centre for Health Protection held a meeting and the following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted in the ward concerned:
 
  1. Enhance patient screening procedures at the ward;
  2. Apply stringent contact precautions, including dedicated use of patient care equipment for affected patients, and enhanced hand hygiene; and
  3. Enhance cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned.
 
     The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
