ITC launches Midstream Research Programme for Universities
**********************************************************
The Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) today (December 23) launched the Midstream Research Programme for Universities (MRP) to encourage universities funded by the University Grants Committee to conduct more theme-based midstream research in focused technology areas.

The Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas W Yang, said, "Hong Kong is home to world-class universities and researchers. Through this new programme, we wish to encourage our universities to collaborate with each other and leading research institutions worldwide to conduct more inter-disciplinary and multi-institutional translational research and development work, so that more research outcomes could be made available for further downstream research work or product development."

The funding ceiling for each project is $5 million. Projects involving collaboration across multiple disciplines, universities or research institutions will be accorded priority and a higher funding ceiling of $10 million per project.

The first round of the MRP is now open for application until the end of March 2017. Project proposals under the theme "Elderly Health and Care" are invited. Research and development projects that may enhance the well-being of the elderly will be the focal point, particularly those that are related to preventing, diagnosing or treating dementia or those that facilitate quality care for dementia patients. Applications will be assessed by expert panel(s) comprising members from the academia and industry.

More information on the MRP is available on the Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF) website (www.itf.gov.hk). For enquiries, please contact the ITF Secretariat (MRP section) by telephone on 3655 5958 or by email at enquiry@itf.gov.hk.
