***************************************************************

To express their care for senior citizens this winter, members of the Housing Department Volunteers Corps (Volunteers Corps) recently visited about 80 elderly singletons and elderly couples living at Shek Lei (2) Estate, Kwai Tsing.

The Chairman of the Volunteers Corps and Assistant Director (Legal Service) of Housing Department, Mrs Kitty Yan, said today (December 17) that the Volunteers Corps was established over 19 years ago, and aims to encourage colleagues from the Housing Department to take part in different volunteer activities after office hours with a view to expressing their care and regards to elderly people residing in public rental housing estates (PRH).

"On December 10, the Volunteers Corps organised a group of about 20 members to visit the elderly tenants living at Shek Lei (2) Estate. During the visit, our volunteers attentively listened to the elderly on their daily living and life sharing. Besides, they also inspected the indoor structural conditions and answered the enquiries on housing issues raised by the elderly, which would be later referred to the estate office for follow up action if necessary. In addition to a lucky bag, the volunteers also distributed to the elderly a hat knitted by our colleagues, giving them the feeling of warmth and care in this cooling winter."

This year, the Volunteers Corps has visited about 200 elderly tenants living at Shek Kip Mei Estate, Lai On Estate, Lai Kok Estate and Tin Yuet Estate as well as organising afternoon gatherings for about 150 elderly tenants at Sha Kok Estate and Tin Yuet Estate to the celebrate Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival respectively. In the coming month, the Volunteers Corps will organise a tuition class for members to prepare festive rice cakes for presenting to another group of elderly PRH tenants.
