The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Ruttonjee Hospital announced today (December 12) the temporary closure of the staircase leading to the entrance at No. 55 Wanchai Road with effect from December 19 (Monday) to facilitate construction work for a lift and escalator to improve public access to the hospital (see attached photo).

The spokesman for Ruttonjee Hospital said the works to provide new facilities are scheduled to be completed in around 18 months. During this period pedestrians can use the other entrances at No. 266 Queen's Road East or No. 1 Wanchai Road for access to the hospital. The hospital would like to apologise to the public for any inconvenience caused arising from the construction work.

The spokesman added that Ruttonjee Hospital had consulted and obtained support from Wanchai District Council for the construction of the lift and escalator and the arrangement for temporary closure of the staircase. The hospital has been distributing handbills to outpatients and the public to disseminate the information on the pedestrian diversion since October this year. Notices to promulgate the arrangement are also displayed in hospital common areas.
