*************************************
The Government today (December 9) announced that the Chief Executive has appointed Professor Frederick Ma Si-hang as Chairman of the Council of the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) for a term of three years with effect from April 25, 2017.

The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, welcomed the above appointment.

"Professor Ma held different key positions at various local and overseas banks, financial institutions and major organisations in private and public sectors. He joined the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government in 2002 as the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury and assumed the post of Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development in 2007. A prominent leader in society, Professor Ma has extensive experience in business management and public administration. I am confident that he will be able to lead EdUHK to pursue excellence and scale new heights," Mr Ng said.

Mr Ng also paid tribute to Dr Pang Yiu-kai, the outgoing Chairman of the EdUHK Council.

"Since 2002, Dr Pang has been a member of the Council of the then Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd), and was appointed as Treasurer and Chairman in 2005 and 2009 respectively. Under the sterling leadership of Dr Pang, the HKIEd was awarded the university title in 2016 and became the eighth publicly funded university in Hong Kong. This was a timely recognition of the efforts and contributions made by the HKIEd over the years. On behalf of the HKSAR Government, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr Pang for his relentless contributions," he said.
