Cluster of Multi-Drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in Caritas Medical Centre

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Caritas Medical Centre made the following announcement today (December 8):

     Three patients (aged 63 to 76) in a male medical ward have been confirmed as having Multi-Drug Resistant Acinetobacter (MDRA) since November 23. One of them is still hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation with critical condition due to underlying illness. The two remaining patients succumbed on December 5 due to underlying medical conditions.

     The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted:

1. Enhanced cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned;
2. Application of stringent contact precautions and enhanced hand hygiene;
3. Increased environmental sampling for monitoring; and
4. Enhanced attention to contamination-prone procedures.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward.
