******************************************************************************************
The Customs and Excise Department stepped up enforcement action against cross-boundary drug trafficking activities at Lo Wu Control Point in the past two weeks and detected a total of 10 cases of suspected dangerous drugs. Different kinds of suspected drugs of about 500 grams with an estimated market value of about $400,000 were seized. A total of 10 people were arrested.

The seized suspected drugs included ketamine, heroin, and methamphetamine. The drugs were found concealed in folded banknotes, packed on the body or concealed in luggage. The 10 arrested persons, including seven men and three women, aged from 32 to 55, claimed to be unemployed or worker. The cases are still under investigation.

Hong Kong Customs will step up enforcement at all control points during Christmas and New Year’s holidays to combat cross-boundary drug trafficking activities. Hong Kong Customs appeals to the public to stay away from drugs and refrain from engaging in cross-boundary drug trafficking.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.
