SCED attends Environmental Goods Agreement Ministerial Meeting in Geneva (with photo)
*************************************************************************************
The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, today (December 4, Geneva time) attended the concluding plenary session of the Environmental Goods Agreement (EGA) Ministerial Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.

Hong Kong is among 17 of the World Trade Organization members participating in the negotiation for the EGA which aims at liberalising tariffs on a wide range of environmental goods. At the meeting, Mr So took part in the discussion with other participating ministers on ways to conclude the EGA by resolving some important outstanding issues.

Mr So said that Hong Kong, as a supporter of free trade, supports all constructive efforts to achieve reduction of tariffs on environmental goods and looks forward to the early conclusion of the negotiation.

Hong Kong's export trade will benefit from the reduction of tariffs on environmental goods by our trading partners upon the implementation of the EGA. The liberalisation of tariffs on environmental goods covered by the EGA will also lower the cost of those products, which will be conducive to their wider use and to environmental protection in general, he said.

Mr So will continue his visit in Switzerland tomorrow (December 5, Geneva time). He will visit the World Trade Organization and the Chinese Embassy in Switzerland, and meet with his Swiss counterparts to foster trade ties with the country. He will then proceed to Ireland on December 6.
