S for S visits Switzerland and Germany (with photos)

     The Secretary for Security, Mr Lai Tung-kwok, arrived in Nuremburg today (December 1, Nuremburg time) to begin his visit to Germany.

     Prior to his arrival in Nuremburg, Mr Lai visited the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Geneva, Switzerland, yesterday morning (November 30, Geneva time) where he was briefed by the Director General of the IOM, Mr William Lacy Swing, on the IOM's efforts to promote international co-operation on migration issues by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

     Mr Lai also paid a courtesy call on the Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and Other International Organizations in Switzerland, Ambassador Ma Zhaoxu, in the afternoon before he left for Nuremburg.

     This morning, Mr Lai visited the headquarters of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in Nuremburg where he was briefed on its work of handling immigration and refugees matters. He also stopped by a reception centre for refugees in order to gain a better understanding of its operation and facilities.

     Mr Lai will leave for Berlin in the afternoon. He will pay a courtesy call on the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Germany, Mr Shi Mingde.

     Mr Lai will meet with the State Secretary of Federal Ministry of the Interior of Germany, Dr Emily Haber, and the Acting Commissioner for Refugee Housing and Support of Berlin, Mr Wolf Plesmann, tomorrow morning to learn more about their way of handling refugee matters.

     Mr Lai will leave Berlin the same day and will return to Hong Kong in the afternoon on December 3.
