Enrolment for "SciPOP" Science Presentation Contest 2017 starts
***************************************************************
The Hong Kong Science Museum, the Faculty of Science of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Education Bureau will jointly hold the "SciPOP" Science Presentation Contest next year as a platform for students to demonstrate their knowledge of science and talent in science communication. Enrolment for the contest started today (December 1) and will close on December 30.

The contest aims to foster the pursuit of science knowledge among local secondary school students and enhance students' presentation and communication skills. Contestants will be required to conduct a 10-minute science presentation, with the use of props or hands-on experiments. They can determine their own presentation topics under the subject of earth sciences or astrophysics.

Contestants must be full-time Hong Kong secondary school students aged 16 or above (as at December 31, 2016). Each team shall be composed of three or four student members and shall be nominated by its school. Each school can nominate a maximum of two teams and the quota for the contest is 70 teams. Applications of the first nominated team will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. After the close of application, the remaining places, if any, will be assigned to the second nominated teams based on the submission time of nomination forms.

Completed nomination forms should be faxed to 2311 2248 at or before 6pm on December 30. Schools admitted to the contest will be notified in writing in early January.

The preliminary and final contests will be held on January 21 and April 22, 2017, respectively. Presentations can be conducted in English, Cantonese or Putonghua.

There will be a champion, a first runner-up, a second runner-up and three merit prizes. The top three winning teams and the teachers-in-charge will be entitled to join the Young Scientists Study Tour 2017 to the US for free, and may visit Palomar Observatory, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory managed for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration by Caltech in California, as well as Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, and observe the total solar eclipse in St Louis, Missouri. Individual finalists will be selected to join the tour according to their performance in the group interview.
