"Zoo Education Exhibition" to showcase bird breeding
****************************************************
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will hold the annual roving exhibition "Zoo Education Exhibition" at six selected parks from next Saturday (December 3) to January 17, 2017, with breeding of birds as the theme this year. The Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens (HKZBG) will also organise special talks about birds to tie in with this theme.

"Zoo Education Exhibition 2016 - Birds: From Courtship to Parenthood" will display information panels with lively photos of different kinds of birds. Visitors will be able to learn more about various breeding stages of birds including courtship, mating, nesting, egg laying, incubation and chicks' hatching. In addition, nests will be displayed to illustrate how birds can use materials from nature to build their nests.

A spokesman for the LCSD said that the department hopes that the exhibition can help enhance public interest in animal ecology as well as raise awareness of nature conservation.

The roving exhibition will be held at six LCSD parks, namely the HKZBG, Tai Po Waterfront Park, Tuen Mun Park, Yuen Long Park, Kowloon Park and Hong Kong Park. It will start at the HKZBG, where the exhibition will be held from December 3 to 11. In order to make the event even more appealing, Meet-the-Zookeepers sessions and guided tours will take place during the first two days (December 3 and 4) of the exhibition there.

During the Meet-the-Zookeepers sessions, zookeepers of the HKZBG will share with visitors their experience in daily primate care and animal conservation. Visitors will also have an opportunity to learn more about the HKZBG's animals, including Bornean orang-utans, buff-cheeked gibbons, emperor tamarins, golden-headed lion tamarins and pygmy marmosets, as well as black and white ruffed lemurs. This is the third round of Meet-the-Zookeepers sessions organised by the HKZBG this year.

Also on December 3 and 4, four educational talks will be held with the topics "Our Feathered Neighbours", "Wetlands - A Home for Birds", "Know More about Black Kites in Hong Kong" and "Blue-crowned Laughingthrush: From the Basics to Conservation". Guided tours will also be held during which park visitors can tour the HKZBG and see for themselves about 70 mammals, 220 birds and 30 reptiles being kept there.

Visitors will find plenty to enjoy while taking part in these interactive and fun activities, the spokesman said.

Interested parties should assemble at the information counter of the HKZBG's Education and Exhibition Centre at specified hours. In addition, park visitors will also be able to take part in stall games on animal knowledge. Souvenirs will be available for distribution. All activities will be free of charge.

Please refer to the annex for information on the exhibition periods of the six parks and details of the Meet-the-Zookeepers sessions, talks and guided tours at the HKZBG. Public enquiries can be made to the LCSD's Zoo and Horticulture Education Unit at 2723 6053 or 2530 0154 during office hours.
