1 539 validly nominated candidates for Election Committee Subsector Ordinary Elections
**************************************************************************************
The names of the 1 539 validly nominated candidates for the 2016 Election Committee Subsector Ordinary Elections (other than the religious subsector) were gazetted today (November 22). The number for each candidate on the ballot papers for contested subsectors/sub-subsectors, which was determined by drawing of lots, was also announced.

Polls for 25 contested subsectors/sub-subsectors involving 1 239 candidates will be held on December 11. Voting for 12 subsectors and one sub-subsector will not be required and 300 candidates will be returned uncontested.

Among the 1 553 nomination forms received during the nomination period, four candidates withdrew their nominations before the close of the nomination period. Ten nominations were ruled invalid by the Returning Officers. The information is set out below:

The number of validly nominated candidates (i.e. 17) in the import and export subsector is less than the number of seats allocated to it (i.e. 18).

"The above ruling of nominations will not affect the elections or the Chief Executive Election to be held in March next year. Although the number of validly nominated candidates in the import and export subsector is less than the number of seats allocated to it, there is at present no provision in the Chief Executive Election Ordinance which allows the conduct of a by-election to fill the remaining vacant seat of the subsector concerned," a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office said.

Six designated bodies of the religious subsector submitted nomination forms during the nomination period, involving a total of 400 nominees. Amongst the nominees, three were ruled invalid by the Returning Officer.

With the exception of the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Christian Council, the other four designated bodies have indicated their order of preference in respect of the nominees on the nomination forms. The Returning Officer has arranged lots drawing for the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Christian Council in order to decide which nominees of these bodies will represent the subsector in the Election Committee. A notice on valid nominations as members of the Election Committee for the religious subsector was gazetted today.

The gazette notices and information about the candidates are available on the election website (www.elections.gov.hk).
