****************************************************************
The Water Supplies Department (WSD) today (November 20) held the Ma On Shan Water Treatment Works Open Day. Through guided tours and an exhibition, the event introduced the water treatment process and technologies in Hong Kong, attracting more than 2 000 visitors.

Visitors were guided by the WSD's staff for a technical tour on the whole water treatment process, from the raw water inlet chamber to filter beds. Through display panels, the staff also introduced various water treatment technologies in different water treatment works and their development history in Hong Kong.

To enhance the knowledge of the public about the WSD's efforts in water quality monitoring and promotion of sustainable development, a number of related innovative technologies at the water treatment works were particularly showcased at the event, including the Zebrafish Bio-monitoring System invented by the WSD, the Olfactometer and a hydropower plant.

Commissioned in 1997, the Ma On Shan Water Treatment Works provides a treated water supply to Sha Tin and Ma On Shan areas with a daily treatment capacity of 227 000 cubic metres.
