The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Clement Cheung, today (November 18) visited elderly and ethnic minority residents in Tung Chung, and met with members of the Islands District Council to gain an overview of the district.

     Accompanied by the District Officer (Islands), Mr Anthony Li, Mr Cheung first met with the Chairman of the Islands District Council, Mr Chow Yuk-tong, and other District Council members to learn about the overall development of the district and exchange views on various district issues.

     Mr Cheung then visited the elderly services centre of the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council Tung Chung Integrated Services Centre, which was established in 2001. The centre is committed to providing diversified support services to the senior citizens in the district, including community information and referrals, health talks and recreational and social activities, so as to encourage them to lead an active community life. Inside the centre, Mr Cheung listened to the elderly people who were there to join activities talk about their daily life.

     Later, Mr Cheung visited the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council's TOUCH - Support Service Centre for Ethnic Minorities in the Tung Chung Community Services Complex. He learnt from the staff that the centre, funded by the Government and set up in 2012, provides tutorial classes, interest classes and cultural exchange activities for the ethnic minorities in the district to help them integrate into the community. Mr Cheung visited tutorial classes in the Centre to see students doing their homework, and chatted with ethnic minority women to better understand how they adapt to life in the community.
