*********************************************************
The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Clement Cheung, visited the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) today (November 17) to learn more about the work of the department and to take the opportunity to meet its staff.

Mr Cheung first met with the Commissioner for Census and Statistics, Mr Leslie Tang, and the directorate staff. He noted that the C&SD is committed to providing adequate, relevant, reliable and timely statistics to facilitate research, discussion, planning and decision making within the Government and in the community.

While touring the Economic Statistics Division (1), Mr Cheung chatted with staff to better understand their daily work. The work of the division includes dealing with external merchandise trade statistics and price statistics. At the Trade Statistics Processing Section, he was given a demonstration on how the Electronic Cargo Manifest System handles water import/export declarations and cargo manifests.

Later, Mr Cheung visited the Labour Statistics Division and was briefed by staff on the Quarterly Survey of Employment and Vacancies. He also learned how the staff collect related data by conducting computer-assisted telephone interviews. The division deals with labour statistics and undertakes surveys of employment, payroll, wages and manpower.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Cheung met staff representatives of various grades at a tea gathering to exchange views on issues that concern them. He praised colleagues for their efforts, and encouraged them to continue to provide high-quality statistical services and contribute to the social and economic development of Hong Kong.
