Young readers and library volunteers awarded for outstanding performance (with photos)

     The Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department today (November 12) presented prizes at Hong Kong Central Library to more than 50 students who participated in the 2015-16 Reading Programme for Children and Youth, and Gold Awards to two outstanding volunteers from the same year's Voluntary Helpers Scheme in recognition of their efforts in library reading and voluntary work.
 
     Both programmes were organised by the HKPL. In the reading programme, 34 book reports received Star of the Month awards, of which the nine best were awarded Reading Supernova. The 19 members who were most active in attending the Monthly Meeting of Joyful Reading were awarded "Elite of Joyful Reading" medals.
 
     In addition, the schools which successfully nominated the largest number of members were presented with Most Active School in Promoting Participation awards, while those with the highest total number of books read by their nominated members were presented with Most Active School in Promoting Reading awards. The winning schools are as follows:

Hong Kong Baptist Convention Primary School
 
     Speaking at the prize presentation ceremony, the Assistant Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Libraries and Development), Miss Rochelle Lau, said that the Reading Programme for Children and Youth aims to foster a good reading habit among children and youths, while also encouraging parents to enjoy the fun of paired reading with their children. She thanked the students, parents and schools for their support, adding that she was impressed by the increasingly high standard of the book reports submitted, many of which were rich in content and subtle in sentiment.
 
     Since its launch in 1984, the reading programme has encouraged the participation of children and youths from kindergarten to Secondary Six. To promote paired reading, children from kindergarten to Primary Three can join the family category with their parents.
