ExCo Non-official Members visit T·PARK (with photos)
****************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Executive Council Secretariat:

The Non-official Members of the Executive Council (ExCo Members) today (November 11) visited Hong Kong's first sludge treatment facility, T·PARK, in Tuen Mun to learn about its state-of-the-art sludge incineration and self-sustaining operation systems.

The ExCo Members were first briefed by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, on the construction concept and operation of T·PARK. They then visited the Environmental Education Centre to understand T·PARK's sludge incineration technology and also its power generation, desalination and wastewater treatment systems.

T·PARK generates electricity for the facility's operational needs by recovering heat generated from the incineration process. Surplus power is exported to the power grid. It also practises a self-sufficient water management strategy by using desalination technology to produce fresh water for use on-site, and by adopting a zero-wastewater-discharge policy to reuse processed wastewater for cleaning and other purposes.

The ExCo Members visited the Central Control Room of T·PARK's plant to learn more about the monitoring system and the staff's work conditions. They also visited the public leisure facilities of T·PARK, including its spa pools which are kept at constant temperatures by using waste heat energy recovered from sludge incineration.

Appreciating the advanced and comprehensive operation systems, ExCo Members said that T·PARK fully demonstrates the dedication of Hong Kong to transform waste into energy. They expressed the hope that the public could raise awareness on environmental protection by paying more visits to the facility and practise green living.

Non-official Members joining the visit today included Convenor Mr Lam Woon-kwong, Ms Anna Wu, Professor Arthur Li, Mr Chow Chung-kong and Mr Ip Kwok-him.
