Hong Kong's contemporary kunqu opera "Flee by Night" enchants Berlin audience (with photo)
******************************************************************************************
The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Berlin (HKETO Berlin) supported the performance of the contemporary kunqu opera "Flee by Night" on November 5 (Berlin time) at the Academy of Arts (AdK) in Berlin. About 350 guests attended the finale of the "Trilogy of Experimental Traditional Opera" by Hong Kong experimental art pioneer Danny Yung. The one-act play "Flee by Night" belongs to one of the oldest forms of traditional Chinese opera, kunqu opera, which was recognised as World Cultural Heritage in 2001.

In her speech at the welcoming reception prior to the performance, the Director of HKETO Berlin, Ms Betty Ho, highlighted Hong Kong's unique art scene. "Hong Kong is blessed with a very unique East meets West character, which has eventually evolved to foster a vibrant international community embracing talents from all around the world," she said.

"To meet the growing cultural needs of the people, the Hong Kong Government has embarked on a long-term investment in cultural hardware by designating 40 hectares of land at the Victoria Harbourfront for development of the West Kowloon Cultural District, which will further strengthen Hong Kong’s position as an international cultural hub," she added.

"Flee by Night" is one of the most celebrated productions by Zuni Icosahedron. Founded in 1982, Zuni is an influential contemporary theatre company in Hong Kong. Zuni has produced more than 160 original productions of alternative theatre and multimedia performances. Besides producing theatre works, Zuni is also active in video, sound experimentation and installation arts, as well as in arts education, art criticism, cultural policy research and international exchange.

Danny Yung has applied highly unorthodox approaches for 30 years to develop an independent avant-garde approach from traditional theatre's experimental and subversive essence. "Flee by Night" exemplifies his aesthetic concept, seeking to connect the politics with a reflection on theatrical means. The result is an impressive contemporary performance. It showcases Hong Kong’s artistic diversity and unique character as a melting pot of cultures.

"Flee by Night" was staged under the umbrella of AdK’s exhibition and event series "Uncertain States", which combines an experiential space with an exhibition of contemporary art as well as thinking space through lectures, performances and theatre. The exhibition project, funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, is running until January 15, 2017.
