CHP investigates outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus infection in kindergarten-cum-child care centre
******************************************************************************************
     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) is today (November 7) investigating an outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in a kindergarten-cum-child care centre (KG/CCC) in Tsuen Wan, and again urged the public and management of institutions to practise strict personal, hand and environmental hygiene.

     The 23 affected pupils, 12 boys and 11 girls all aged 2, have developed fever, cough, runny nose or sore throat since October 26. Among them, 19 sought medical attention while four of them were hospitalised and three have been discharged upon management.

     The nasopharyngeal swab of one hospitalised pupil tested positive for RSV upon laboratory testing by the hospital concerned.

     All affected pupils have been in stable condition all along. Investigations are continuing.

     Officers of the CHP conducted a site visit and advised the KG/CCC to adopt necessary infection control measures against respiratory infections. The centre has been put under medical surveillance.

     The public should observe advice against respiratory illnesses:

  • Wash hands with liquid soap and water properly whenever possibly contaminated;
  • When hands are not visibly soiled, clean them with 70 to 80 per cent alcohol-based handrub;
  • Cover the nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, and wash hands thoroughly afterwards;
  • Dispose of soiled tissue paper properly in a lidded rubbish bin;
  • Put on a surgical mask when respiratory symptoms develop;
  • Maintain good indoor ventilation;
  • Avoid going to crowded or poorly ventilated public places; high-risk individuals may consider putting on surgical masks in such places; and
  • Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, take adequate rest, do not smoke and avoid overstress.

     The public may visit the CHP's page on RSV infection or call the DH's Health Education Hotline (2833 0111) for more information.
