Police take action to disperse people assembling unlawfully
***********************************************************
Regarding the protestors conducting a public procession in Central District and Western District yesterday (November 6) without notifying Police according to the law, participating in unlawful assembly and charging Police cordon lines, protestors ignored Police’s repeated appeals and refused to leave the scene. About 12.30am today (November 7), Police took actions to disperse the protestors.

Starting from about 7pm last night, the protestors assembled unlawfully on Connaught Road West and Des Voeux Road West causing severe traffic disruption in the vicinity. Such acts endangered the safety of the protestors themselves and the safety of other road users. Some protesters even behaved in a disorderly manner including holding bamboo poles, throwing bricks and other objects. Police issued multiple advice and warnings, including the display of warning banners, but the protestors refused to comply. Police had no other alternatives but to use batons and discharge OC foam to preserve public order and safeguard public safety.

To ensure public safety and maintain public order, Police took actions at 12.30am today to disperse those assembling unlawfully so as to resume the traffic.

During the operation, Police arrested four persons, including two men and a woman, aged between 39 and 65, for obstructing police officer in due execution of duties; and a 57-year-old man for failing to produce proof of identity. All arrestees are being detained for enquiries.

Two police officers were injured during the operation. One police officer was thrown bricks by protestors and sustained leg injuries. Another police officer sustained hand injuries in the operation.

Police strongly condemned the unlawful behaviours of protesters. Police will conduct follow-up investigation and will not rule out the possibility of further arrest action.

Police reiterate that we respect the public's freedoms of expression, speech and assembly and always handle public meetings, processions and demonstrations in a fair, just and impartial manner in accordance with the laws of Hong Kong.

It is the policy of Police to facilitate all lawful and peaceful public events while at the same time ensuring public safety and public order. Members of the public should comply with the laws of Hong Kong and maintain social order when expressing their views.
