Road safety operation to promote safe cycling
**********************************************

Police conducted a territory-wide campaign between October 28 and November 1 to raise public awareness of safe cycling through stringent enforcement action.

During the operation, the Police used enforcement action to target cycling offences such as failing to comply with traffic signs or signals, cycling on footway for pedestrian and walking on cycle tracks. Enforcement action resulted in the issue of 18 verbal warnings and 642 summonses.

A Police spokesman said that between January and September 2016, there were 1,496 traffic accidents involving bicycles, resulting in 1,544 casualties, with nine fatalities included. Number of the traffic accidents and casualties that occurred on cycle tracks are similar to that occurred on roads, which is 633 and 640 cases, causing 659 and 658 casualties respectively.

Cyclists are reminded to comply with Road Traffic Ordinance. Offenders committing cycling offences will be prosecuted.
