Safe cycling enforcement operation starts
*****************************************

Police will conduct a five-day territory-wide enforcement operation on safe cycling from tomorrow (October 28) to raise public awareness on cycling safety.

To promote safe cycling messages to cyclists and the public, Police officers distributed publicity leaflets at various locations throughout the territory prior to the operation. During the operation, Police will take stringent actions against cycling offences to encourage safe cycling.

From January to August 2016, there were 1,319 traffic accidents involving bicycles, causing 1,360 casualties. When compared with 1,672 traffic accidents and 1,737 casualties in the same period of last year, the figures decreased by about 21 per cent and 22 per cent respectively.

Eight cyclists died in the traffic accidents, with six of them aged 59 or above. Seven of the fatal accidents happened on roads.

Common cycling offences include riding on the pavement, failing to comply with traffic lights, signs or road markings, riding without the necessary lights at night or times of poor visibility, carrying another person or any animal or article which obstructs the cyclist's view.

Police reminded members of the public that traffic accidents can be fatal and urged cyclists to obey road traffic regulations and pay attention to road safety.
