Police yesterday (October 24) concluded a four-day territory-wide operation to remind drivers of goods vehicles the importance of safe driving.

This was the latest in an ongoing series of operations conducted by the Police using enforcement to target moving traffic offences, with a view to reducing traffic accidents and maintaining a smooth traffic flow.

The operation resulted in the arrest of two drivers and the issue of 18 summonses and 1,381 fixed penalty tickets. One goods vehicle was suspected of violating safety requirements of the Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations and was sent to a Motor Vehicle Examination Centre for further investigation.

Among the 1,399 summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 849 were issued for illegal parking, 105 for speeding, 101 for failing to comply with traffic signs, 79 for using hand-held mobile phone while driving, 62 for seatbelt-related offences, 22 for overloading, 11 for insecure load, eight for failing to comply with traffic light signals, and five for construction and maintenance offences.

In January to September 2016, traffic accidents involving goods vehicles accounted to 2,504, involving 3,436 casualties. This accounted for 21 per cent and 23 per cent of the total traffic accidents and casualties respectively.
